What is Delta-8 THC?

THC Types- The difference between Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC

We all know THC is what gets us high, right? But did you know that there are different variants of THC?

The name of the type of THC that gets you “high,” is Delta-9 THC. But Delta-9 is not the only type of THC with psychoactive effects. Delta-8 THC is known to have those same effects on some users.

What makes Delta-8 and Delta-9 different is the location of a specific bond between two of the atoms that create each THC molecule. Delta-8 has the double bond on the 8th carbon in the chain, while Delta-9 has the double bond on the 9th carbon in the chain. The “8” and “9” signify the placement of the chemical bond. So while Delta-8 and Delta-9 possess a similar chemical makeup, the structural similarity between the two allows them to share similar effects.

Because cannabis and hemp plants grow only a limited amount of Delta-8 THC, it’s a lot more rare than Delta-9. While it is in fact rarer, it can still be derived from either type of cannabis plant- with special methods.

Key Differences between Delta-8 and Delta-9

Both Delta-8 and Delta-9 can be psychoactive for some users. However, Delta-8 carries less potency than Delta-9. Consumers can expect many of the effects and benefits of Delta-9, on a lesser scale. Think of it as a happy medium between CBD and Delta-9 THC.

Both give a sense of euphoria
Both have the ability to energize or relax the consumer- depending on the terpene and cannabinoid profile
Both carry the possibility of a psychoactive experience

The main takeaway is that with Delta-8 THC, all of these effects are experienced, just with a lesser intensity. This is true even for experienced cannabis users. While there is a noticeable effect with Delta-8 THC, it is not as intense as that of Delta-9 THC.
